You can make this classic Library Chair with a minimum of woodworking skills. Most cuts are straight but a few are curved to be done with a jig saw or band saw. (1) Lay template on wood of your choice (2)draw and cut out shapes. (3) Sand and varnish (4) assemble with electric drill and screw driver. Very attractive and extremely practical. (More customer reviews)I've had this big step two-stool for over 10 years. Recently, I gave it to my elderly father because it is very lightweight and wouldn't strain him carrying it up and down stairs and around the house. I thought I could easily replace it with any 'ol stool. Boy was I wrong. I never knew how good I had it with this stool until I had to replace it.
Mostly every step stool I've looked at has all of the following problems:
1. Too heavy. Most stools I've seen are heavyduty--"heavy" being the operative word. While these stools are a bit sturdier and steadier, you pay the price with their added weight. I live in a one-floor apartment and didn't think the extra weight would be a big deal. It soon became an issue as I discovered I was no longer able to put it up and retrieve it from the narrow nook where I stored it without great effort. Thus, I ended up leaning it against a wall rather than putting it away.
2. Steps aren't wide enough to safely transverse. The bottom step typically does not stick out far enough to easily step down onto it. Rather than naturally stepping down, I had to look down to find the step first. (Clearly, no one actually tests these steps before they approve the design.)
3. Top step isn't high enough to effectively use the stool to reach high areas. A three-step stool is much more than I need. A one-step stool is too low. A two-step stool is just right, assuming the second step is high enough. I noticed other stools have the top step a couple of inches lower than this stool.
I bought a stool from Home Depot and lasted about a month before I returned it. I hated it. It had all of the above problems. Much to my joy, Cosco still makes the model I had. $28 is a bit pricey as compared to others, but if I cannot find it cheaper anywhere else, I'll have to suck it up and pay it. No other stool will do.

24" Step Stool in Cappuccino Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this as a gift for the lady of the house to use to reach high cabinets. The finished stool is nice, but the assembly left some things to be desired. The included Allen wrench was flimsy and broke halfway through the project, leaving a bit of metal that could not be removed from the large screw. After struggling with the remaining assembly, however, the finished stool is sturdy and solid. It has become a favorite for sitting at the counter (the gripping strips are simply mitered strips and do not reduce comfort for sitting) and for reaching high places.

Cosco 11-402CLGG2 Big Step Stool, 3-Step, Gray Review

(More customer reviews)This step stool is not perfect, but it strikes the best balance I could find in the trade-off between adequate sturdiness versus ease of carrying and setup. The construction is relatively lightweight (only rated for 200#). I found the stool easier to carry from room to room and easier to open and close than other models I checked out at the hardware store. Great for changing light bulbs and other quick tasks.

(More customer reviews)For those who are looking for a stool that you don't have to pick up to move, this rolling stool is perfect. In the kitchen, I can just kick it to where I want it and step up. Once you put weight on it, the wheels retract and the base of the stool remains stable on the floor. When you step off, the spring-loaded wheels come back out ready to be rolled to the next place. This is the type of stool that are used in libraries. The heavy-duty steel version costs more, but this particular Xtend & Climb 962 is made of sturdy plastic, is lighter weight, and is reasonably priced.

By putting a staging plank across two steps (bottom or middle-NOT top) I could work on an eight foot ceiling easily without a lot of up/down agravation. This step ladder is very well made, I feel very comfortable using it and highly recommend it, especially in pairs with a plank. It will definitely increase productivity.

(More customer reviews)I bought the yellow version of this step stool - my grandma used to have one just like it, or so I thought. This is not the step stool I was hoping for. It's clunkier, cheaper, and not the same "shiny" vinyl that my grandma had. The step stool mechanism on this new one is just cheap plastic that allows the steps to "slide" in and out. I had a little bit of trouble putting it together. Oh, and on the instructions, you're told that you'll have to periodically retighten the bolts! What - is this thing going to come apart with use?!?! Overall, a disappointment and not worth the amount of money I paid for it. Nice idea, but I want the REAL thing, not some cheap imitation.

(More customer reviews)This item is described as "Meets ANSI Standard s for Type II Medium Household Rating"; however the label attached to the product clearly states Type III. Type II is a "medium" rating, Type III is a "light" rating. The stool was lower than expected and I've since seen it offered for sale at Home Depot for $10 less (not marked "Cosco" brand but obviously the same product). The stools at Home Depot were also marked Type III. I returned the stool to Amazon because of the incorrect description. I was impressed by the ease of returning the stool; Amazon arranged for UPS to pick up the package from my house at their expense. I'm not impressed that Amazon still hasn't corrected their product description.
I have since purchased an aluminum stool from Home Depot for under $20 which is rated Type II, is several inches higher than this item, and is much easier to carry around because of its light weight.

(More customer reviews)PROS -- it's lightweight and portable and storable. It's sturdy when it's open and easy to use if you are just trying to reach up a bit higher for something.
CONS -- it does slide on linoleum, though not with adult weight on it. I bought it thinking it would be a spacesaving, inexpensive option for my child to reach the sink and counters since it's a little higher than those two-step kids' stepstools, but a young child on it, pushing against a counter trying to reach forward, can slide it backwards. Plus, because of the slant in the back, the step is a few inches away from the counter/cabinets and leveraging little toes against it while reaching forward makes it even more likely to slide on a linoleum floor. So if you are also thinking of putting a kid on it instead of a space-hogging heavy block-type stepstool, keep looking.
The top step is sturdy and textured so that you won't slip on it, but it's not a very wide step, so it's only great for reaching for things. I wouldn't stand on it for doing things like painting or installing something.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my 80 year-old mother, so she could sit while she does kitchen chores.
The stool is light-weight enough for her to move and provides a comfortable seat.
There are two drawbacks: the step part of the stool doesn't come out quite far enough, giving the feeling of instability. Also, I assumed the entire unit folded for storage, but this is not the case. Only the steps fold in.
Both of the above are minor drawbacks and I would recomend this item to anyone.
