HyLoft 1000 Multi-Tire Rack Storage Review

(More customer reviews)Mounting this wheel/tire rack is a mostly simple process. The base plate mounts with heavy duty screws into wall studs. It is set up for 16" centered studs, but you can drill more holes for any stud spacing. Then you can slide the two end brackets into the base plate. The little trickier part is to next install the three horizontal, adjustable steel bars so your tires size(s) fit OK. It took me 2 trial settings before settling on a good "fit." This process can be a pain if you do it like I did. I put the unit high on my garage wall which meant I carried a wheel/tire up a step ladder. Since I didn't already mark which holes to put the horizontal into, changing the setting twice after the initial one meant carrying the wheel/tire up the ladder 3 times. A smarter way would be to leave the end brackets on the floor and loosely install the horizontal bars, try a wheel/tire on it by tipping the unit backwards to get the tire off the floor so it hangs on the bars. Mark which holes to put the bars and then assemble all the pieces onto the wall bracket.
Unit is sturdy and very good overall quality.

Suncast GO3216 Golf Organizer Review

(More customer reviews)I received the Suncast Organizer via UPS. The item had adequate packaging with Styrofoam, and was shrink wrapped, so it was secure enough to prevent most damage in transit.
It took me about 30 minutes to assemble, and the two supplied allen wrenches that came with the screws and nuts were sufficient to assemble the item.
The assembly wasn't as easy as I had hoped. You need to line up the holes and put all the screws in, and sometimes they weren't lining up, and that required a little bit of force to tweak and manipulate the alignment. Definitely can use two people to assemble the unit, and it would be much easier.
As I took the plastic wrapping off, and began assembling the pieces, I noticed that almost all the meshing on the panels were visibly damaged. The mesh material is very fine and delicate, and can be easily punctured and dented with little force or effort. Furthermore, the front brace was bent. I was able to straighten it out, but nevertheless, it was disappointing to see how flimsy the metal was.
A bracket, which holds the middle shelf, was also broken off, making the middle shelf unusable (like missing a a leg on a chair or table). It is made from really poor quality metal that is extremely bendable, and the brackets look like they were glued on. You figure an item that will house golf equipment would be sturdier.
The organizer was so tweaked that one of the footpads needed to be screwed half way out to keep the unit level on the floor.
Overall, I was very disappointed with the quality and workmanship of this item, especially having paid $70 for it.
Amazon.com is sending me a replacement at no charge, so hopefully when I get that one, I'll add another review. Thank goodness for Amazon.com's customer service.
By the way, I called them, instead of doing the return/exchange online. They also emailed me a free shipping label.
The one that will be returned can be used as scrap metal.

(More customer reviews)When I first saw a picture and the low price of this shelving unit, I was skeptical that it would be sturdy enough for my purposes, but after reading the other reviews I decided to take a chance and order a couple of them and I am glad I did. Please understand that the actual shelf is not provided, (which I knew before ordering the units), just the wire and screw eye anchors are provided which is a good idea due to shipping problems with a 2x8 foot board! You must purchase the plywood locally and have it cut for you, which I found was not a problem. The screw anchors are very substantial and require some muscle to screw them in, but they are strong! Installation was simple, but it does take some time to properly locate and mark the drilling locations for the overhead beams if they are covered by sheet-rock. I had to use an electronic stud finder for this part of the installation. Once the holes were drilled for the screw eyes the next step is to screw in them in and this takes some muscle to do it. Before installing the plywood shelf, check that all eye-bolts are even using a level. Adjustment is done by screwing the eye-bolts in or out a bit .Slipping the hooked hangers over the screw eyes takes just seconds and then you are ready to slide the plywood into place which also done easily and quickly, (even more so with some help!). The last step is to attach the little metal tie-down straps that fit over the wires and then screw fastened to the plywood. This is a little tedious, but not difficult. Keep in mind that the thickness and quality of the plywood you buy will determine the stiffness and safety of your overhead shelf. Also make sure you are installing the screw-eye bolts into the wood beams and not just into the sheet-rock (which is not strong enough for even a light load). If you are installing above your garage door, make sure you have sufficient clearance when the garage door is fully open (that is up)!
If installed properly, this shelving unit works great, just like the picture shows. I highly recommend it!

(More customer reviews)After shopping for a garage ceiling storage system, I purchased this device. I was attracted to the ability to raise and lower the platform to load and unload items. This avoids the obvious pitfalls of using a ladder to hoist large or heavy items up from the ground.
In summary, I am reasonably happy with the overall product with some exceptions mentioned below. However, I will caution potential buyers that the design of this device is unforgiving. Unless your ceiling joists are EXACTLY 48" apart (they can be 1.5" less but not more than 48"), installation will be no where near as easy as the video on the website. You may need to mount this to a rigid board first if your joists are not 48" apart. The axle is not made to be adjustable and I find this to be a major design flaw of the device.
The foundation of the system includes 3 heavy metal grates that are secured to two metal cross beams with J hooks. I had a little trouble aligning the J hooks with the holes on the metal beams. However, by far, the most trouble I had was with securing the system to the ceiling. I really did not want to mount this to a board before securing it to the ceiling for aesthetic reasons. My ceiling joists were about 49" apart (instead of 48") and this created a VERY problematic installation. You need to secure this into wood (and not just the ceiling drywall) and you cannot mount the arms of the device further than 48" apart as the axle will not be long enough. I ended up lengthening the axle by a few inches by screwing both halves of the axle together with only the first set of holes. The two halves of the axle are supposed to come together with one inside the other aligning two sets of holes on each piece. I only went as far as the first set thus making it a little longer. Then I bought some aluminum 1/2 inch metal from a hardware store and reinforced the axle by screwing it to two sides of the axle. Keep in mind that the axle is not completely load-bearing so as long as it is rigid and reinforced, the system will work fine (see my uploaded picture of the lengthened and reinforced axle).
Problems continued when I used the included hardware lag bolts to screw the arms into the ceiling joists. Using a drill, I pre-drilled the holes as instructed and used a socket wrench to screw the lag bolts to the joists. I torqued 4 of the heads off of the cheap lag bolts. Do yourself a favor and go buy some better lag bolts at a hardware store before installing this device. The included lag bolts are totally inferior. After finishing the installation, it worked as described and I loaded it with a few hundred pounds of things I had previously kept on my garage floor. I will also mention that using the included crank device to raise and lower the platform, while not overly difficult, is a good work out.
Overall, I would recommend this product IF you know your joists are no further than 48" apart (or you are comfortable mounting it to a board first) and you go buy some decent lag bolts before trying to secure it to the ceiling.

(More customer reviews)I was shopping for a garage ceiling storage system and, based upon the Amazon reviews, I settled on this one. I've been very happy. Not only was the HyLoft Overhead Storage System less expensive than others (and Amazon easily had the best price), I've found it to be very forgiving and very well designed.
The foundation of the HyLoft system are a pair of rigid trapeze like structures which hang down from the ceiling. They can be spaced any number of distances apart -- wherever your ceiling joists (beams) are -- which is very convenient. (With other systems, by contrast, the distances between the supports are fixed). What's also great about the HyLoft system is that it goes up in very small pieces. First the ceiling brackets, then the arms and cross-braces, and finally the three-piece grate which makes up the base. It's easily a one-man job, so no one needs to hang around to help hold the unit up against the ceiling for you.
Lastly, it's also not absolutely critical that everything be placed in exactly the right place. If you're off by a little here or you're a little crooked there, everything is still going to work out fine.
The most difficult part of the entire process is finding the edges of the joist, but this has been made easier too. Just get one of the newer stud finders from Zircon. Mine blinks and throws out a line of light when it reaches the EDGE of the joist. I use blue masking tape (rather than pencil) to keep my ceiling clean. Having both edges marked allowed me to hammer and drill with confidence. (I didn't make a single bad hole once!)
Each 45" x 45" unit is precisely sized to fit those 15 gallon red-topped plastic storage boxes one gets at Home Depot. Each HyLoft rack will hold a DOZEN boxes each! I had originally ordered the 4 ft. by 4 ft. HyLoft racks, but Amazon sent me the 45" x 45" version instead. But since each unit still held twelve storage boxes, I was just as happy! And the slightly smaller size gave me more room around the sides - which made loading boxes into it that much easier.
I have a three-car garage with roll-up doors (one is a double), and I was able to put up five racks (fully extended to 27") in the area behind the garage door motors. That's 5 x 12 boxes or 60 boxes total storage! I was also able to mount two more racks towards the front - above where the doors roll up into - on the double-sized door. Since these were limited to 16" inches in depth, I was only able to hold another six boxes on each (twelve all together for both), for a total of 72 boxes of storage (or the rough equivalent when one takes into account the odd-size pieces of luggage, picnic coolers, tool boxes, and the like). This left my floor totally clear - for bicycles and my lawnmower -- which I had a hard time getting to earlier! (Needless to say, my garage was an absolute mess before I got the HyLofts!)
Since the HyLoft units are limited to about 250 pounds each, I put the heavier items in the front racks which could only hold a single layer of boxes.
My wife was exceptionally pleased - but mainly because she was confident that we had rats living in and amongst all of the boxes. (We didn't, but I didn't mind that she thought that - since it kept her out of the garage, and my little domain! "Hey honey, was that a rat?") Now she's talking about putting a billiards table or a ping pong table in the garage, so I guess making the change was definitely for the better.
The HyLoft Overhead Storage System is one that I would wholeheartedly recommend!
